RD Exam Plan

How to prepare for the RD exam when two specifications are in play

Short answer

Study the specification that governs your exam date, not the one you first downloaded. If you test before 31 December 2026, nearly half the exam is the Nutrition Care Process, so that is where the hours go. If you test from 1 January 2027, clinical content drops to 40% and a new 22% Community and Public Health Nutrition domain appears — a block many candidates have never studied as a discrete topic.

Step 1: confirm your specification

Use the specification tool. Everything else depends on the answer, and study material written for one window can be badly mismatched to the other.

Step 2 (testing in 2026): weight toward nutrition care

Under the 2022–2026 specifications, Nutrition Care for Individuals and Groups is 45% — screening and assessment, nutrition diagnosis, planning and intervention, monitoring and evaluation. Principles of Dietetics and Management are 21% each and Foodservice Systems 13%. A plan that gives the four domains equal time gives the 45% domain less than half the attention it deserves.

Step 2 (testing in 2027 or later): add community and public health

Under the 2027–2031 specifications, clinical drops to 40% and Community and Public Health Nutrition arrives at 22%: community nutrition guidelines and policies, community needs assessment, and programmes for individuals and groups. Management, research, professional practice and marketing consolidate into Fundamentals of Dietetics Practice at 23%, and foodservice becomes Food Science and Food Systems at 15% with food science added.

Step 3: practise against the adaptive format

The exam is adaptive and variable length, with a hard floor of 125 answered questions. Practise finishing, not perfecting: an unfinished exam is scored as a failure. Use the diagnostic to find the weak domain, then the study-plan generator to allocate the weeks you actually have.
